Vision Insurance Plans vs. Medical Insurance Plans
Many patients have both vision insurance (for example, VSP, Davis Vision, or EyeMed) and medical insurance (for example, Anthem, Aetna, Optima, or Medicaid). They are very different in terms of the services they cover, and it is important for our patients to understand these differences. Our office does not make these rules; they are made by the insurance companies, and we must comply with them.
We will ask you to provide your vision and medical information, including current insurance cards, with your photo ID on the day of your appointment.
Here are a few examples of when vision and medical insurance apply:
Vision Insurance
-
Determining patient's glasses prescription
-
Purchasing glasses or contact lenses
-
Annual routine eye exam for a healthy patient who has no eye problems or symptoms
-
Refraction for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
-
Does NOT cover medical conditions, injuries, or treatments
Medical Insurance
-
Coverage for medical conditions, including those that affect the eyes
-
Strabismus (eye turn) and amblyopia (lazy eye)
-
Diabetes
-
Eye infection and pink eye
-
Dry eyes and eye allergies
-
Eye trauma and injuries
-
Pediatric cataracts
-
May not cover refraction for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
There is no way to know prior to your examination which insurance will be filed. In addition, because of constant changes in insurance company policies, please make yourself aware of your benefits and requirements, including:
- Copay, deductible, and co-insurance percentages
- Referral to our specialty, if one is required by your plan
Accepted Insurance Plans
We accept many insurance carriers, including some not listed below. Please call our office to see if your child’s doctor accepts your insurance plan prior to receiving services. Our participation with the health plans listed is subject to change. You should obtain a referral in most cases for new patient visits.
