Pediatric Ophthalmologists
Earl R. Crouch, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S.

Dr. Earl Crouch is an award recognized ophthalmologist who is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is Professor of Ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as the chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology from 1984 to 2012. Dr. Earl Crouch completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois and a pediatric ophthalmology fellowship at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He has regularly lectured at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meetings on topics related to pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, and he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has received the Honor Award from both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He received a Top Doc of Hampton Roads Award in 2009.  His interests include pediatric cataracts, pediatric glaucoma, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm, pediatric and adult strabismus, amblyopia, and general pediatric ophthalmology.

Eric Crouch, M.D.

Dr. Eric Crouch is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He received a Top Doc of Hampton Roads in 2013 and the Distinguished Teaching Award for the Department of Ophthalmology in 2013.  He completed an ophthalmology residency at Geisinger Medical Center and a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He has authored several publications on ophthalmology and has regularly presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meetings. Dr. Eric Crouch has also presented at round table discussions at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meetings and is actively involved in ongoing amblyopia research funded by the National Institute o Health and National Eye Institute.  He has served as the Chief of Ophthalmology for the Norfolk based Sentara Hospitals from 2006-2008.  He currently serves on the Executive Committee and Operations Committee of the National Institute of Health/National Eye Institute Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group.

Dr. Crouch was elected vice-chair of the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) in 2014 and serves on PEDIG's operations committee and executive committee. The PEDIG is a collaborative network dedicated to facilitating multicenter clinical research in strabismus, amblyopia and other eye disorders that affect children. The network, which was formed in 1997, is funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI). There are currently over 105 participating sites with over 700 pediatric ophthalmologists, pediatric optometrists, and staff in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. His practice remains active in numerous clinical trials and provides some of the latest available treatments in pediatric eye diseases.

Dr. Eric Crouch is trained in the management of pediatric and adult strabismus, pediatric cataracts, and various amblyopia treatments. For cases of chronic tearing, Dr. Eric Crouch performs nasolacrimal duct probings, dilations, canalicular stents, and endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy procedures.  For select strabismus cases he offers adjustable suture strabismus surgery. He also manages pediatric eyelid disorders, congenital ptosis, pediatric glaucoma, and general pediatric ophthalmology conditions. His special interests include craniofacial disorders, genetic syndromes, congenital disorders, chemodenervation for strabismus, blepharospasm, and hemifacial spasm.

Stacy Martinson is a board certified optometrist. She sees both children and adult for eye examinations. She also performs contact lens fitting. She is especially skilled in fitting keratoconus and difficult contact lens patients.

Gaylord Ventura, C.O.M.T.

Gaylord Ventura is a certified ophthalmic medical technologist. He assists in the assessment of patients' medical histories and in ophthalmic evaluation. He performs contact lens fitting, sensorimotor examination, visual field testing, visual evoked response testing, clinical photography, and fundus photography. He is especially skilled in fitting difficult pediatric contact lens and aphakic contact lens fittings, and he is knowledgeable about newer high oxygen contact lenses. He is a certified vision tester for the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group and serves as the local PEDIG research coordinator for the National Eye Institute. Gaylord completed his training at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1999. He also is a horticulturalist who grows over 200 varieties of fruits.

Carolina Escala

Carolina Escala is an ophthalmic medical assistant. She studied medical technology, specializing in ophthalmology and optometry, at San Sebastian University in Chile. She assists in the assessment of patients' medical histories, sensorimotor evaluation, and ophthalmic evaluation.  She is working toward becoming a certified ophthalmic assistant. Carolina speaks both English and Spanish.

Charmaine Cortezano manages the on-site optical shop, EC Optical, at our Kempsville Road office. She is a licensed optician and enjoys assisting patients with frame selection and fitting for glasses. Charmaine has years of optical experience and special training in fitting children for glasses.

Kathy Gower, CST

Kathy Gower coordinates surgical scheduling and assists in most surgeries. She has decades of experience and extensive knowledge about ophthalmic surgical procedures. Kathy can answer many patients' questions about clinical testing, procedures, and surgery. She has been with the practice since 1982.

Cy Carlton, C.O.T.

Cy Carlton is a Certified Ophthalmic Technician and is the office manager of the Virginia Pediatric Eye Center. She has previously served as the administrator for the Department of Ophthalmology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Cy has been with the practice since 1977. She can answer most patients' questions regarding administrative issues.
