Outreach: Hampton Roads Community
Our staff and physicians are actively involved in providing ophthalmic care in our community and abroad. Our physicians volunteer annually at the Homeless Outreach Program. This service provides valuable screening examinations for amblyopia, strabismus, glaucoma, and cataracts and provides care for the homeless people in our area.
Our physicians and staff have served on numerous foreign medical projects to Mexico, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. On these trips we provide free eye exams, glasses, surgeries, and other medical care to people with limited access to health care. On average we see about 600-1000 patients per day and perform over 40 surgeries per week on these trips.
We gladly accept donations of old glasses. We take these with us and dispense to people in need. We usually require about 10,000 glasses per trip in order to meet the demand of the patients seen.
